Earn While You Learn

Apprentices partake in the earn while you learn model, which means they work in the field for a signatory contractor alongside journeymen, who show them how to perform the work and help keep them safe. While they work, the apprentices earn living wages for themselves and their families. Additionally, they receive excellent health insurance and retirement benefits, providing a total overall package better than that offered by most non-union electrical contractors.

Not only do the journeymen teach apprentices how to perform their work, but they help them learn how to work efficiently, completing quality work on time and doing it right the first time.

Completing the Local 163 registered apprenticeship program is a great form of education, which allows a pathway to a great lifetime career.

The earn while you learn model is the perfect way to avoid taking on thousands of dollars in student debt. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, apprentices become journeymen and earn college credit that can be applied to further their education.

Receive World-Class Instruction

Besides learning on-the-job (OJT), apprentices also receive classroom instruction or Related Technical Instruction (RTI).

This aspect of their apprenticeship teaches them the basic theories and concepts needed to perform the work, while also allowing them to gain industry-leading certifications.

Held at our state-of-the-art training facility in Nanticoke, classes are taught by Qualified Instructors and Subject Matter Experts. Instructors are trained at the National Training Institute (NTI) by the Electrical Training Alliance. Our instructors have many years of experience in the field and are now dedicated to preparing the next generation of IBEW members.

The Benefits are Great

The benefits of apprenticeship are plentiful. All apprentices earn living wages, and as they progress through the registered apprenticeship program, they earn scheduled pay increases as they improve their skillset and are able to complete more advanced work.

IBEW Local 163 JATC trains apprentices to take pride in the work they do and to be part of a team with the reputation of hardworking, skilled professionals.
