Steamfitter Apprenticeship Opportunities

Steamfitters apprenticeship program consists of five years of on the job training and attending related training at the Training center. Our work can be outside in the elements year round and in all weather conditions. Industrial process piping systems are in Power Houses, Oil Refineries, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Companies and a wide variety of other process applications. Apprentices attend school one day every other week while working and learning on the job. It's a demanding yet rewarding career.

No other organization serves the training needs of the Piping industry like the United Association. For over a century, the UA has been training the most highly-qualified workers in the United States and Canada. Over the past several decades, the United Association's training programs have produced a stable, skilled workforce responsible for building and maintaining sprinkler systems in the various industrial, commercial and residential facilities that make up the North American landscape. No one can match the commitment or investment. The UA spends over $100 million annually on training programs efforts involving approximately 100,000 journeymen and apprentices in over 400 local training facilities at any given time. If the United Association wanted to select the area which best reflects this commitment to the training and excellence produced, it could well look to Northern New Jersey.

Steamfitters Local 475 has a brand new state of the art training facility which we encourage you to come and visit. You can call to set up a tour or just stop by, we are here most days during business hours. In addition to our five-year apprenticeship programs, Steamfitters Local 475 offers continuing education opportunities that includes journeymen training and certification, as well as an associate’s degree program. We understand the importance of having trained quality crafts people installing, inspecting, testing, and maintaining your fire protection systems and no one in Northern New Jersey trains more or better quality pipefitters and welders than U.A. Local 475.

Requirements

Apprenticeship is both an ancient tradition and a highly-effective modern training method, particularly for those choosing to work in the exciting and increasingly technical construction industry. LU # 475's apprentices learn through both classroom and on-the-job training in what is considered by many to be the best construction industry apprentice program in the world. The five-year apprenticeship period is divided into one-year segments, each of which includes 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 216 hours of related classroom instruction. All training programs are run through United Association local joint training committees in specific cities or regions, and are overseen by National Joint Training Committees. One of the things that makes the UA training program so successful is that we view it as a joint partnership between labor and management. Apprenticeship is not an easy time, apprentices must work the same hours as journeymen plus attend classes. Yet, this can be a highly rewarding career path for an individual who is motivated to learn the piping trade and become an active member of a proud and noble trade union.
